Ah, the runt of the Scorsese litter, the oft-derided, unloved follow-up to The Hustler. But, you know, it's pretty good. Has its bad points (as one may expect): Tom Cruise is insufferable, there's some v. bad '80s choons - at one point Phil Collins can be heard crooning away in the background - and you can't help but feel that Marty only did it to get in the studio's good books so they'd finance Goodfellas or The Last Temptation of Christ.

Still, the trademark whiplash direction is present and correct, Paul Newman is fantastic in it (won an oscar for it, I think) and the dialogue is snappy, interesting and entertaining, although not as good as the brilliantly written Hustler.

I did prefer The Hustler, but the Color of Money wasnt a bad film. Scorsese's directing is evident, some really nice shots during the Pool games adds to the excitement, something which the original film lacked. However, I feel that this film failed to really grasp any of the key characters, Tom Cruises character was annoying throughout and there were times you just wanted him to disappear (But this was probably intended) Paul Newman was fantastic as usual, he won an Oscar, but to be honest I feel that it was more for his performances in past films such as Cool hand Luke and The Sting where he had missed out. (One of many reasons I despise the Oscars) One other thing that really bugged me was the soundtrack, there were some cracking tunes, but it felt as if someone had turned up the volume to 11. During certain scenes the music became really distracting and this was most likely some marketing ploy but a bit of extra cash. Not a bad film at all, but I wouldn't watch it again.

if anyone is to properly answer what defines great cinema, mr scorcese should be given an attentive ear. the colour of money is high quality on all ends; the direction is self-assured, the story explores the questions it raises with curiosity and diligence, the narrative machine maintains the right speed at all times, and the visuals, with the superbly controlled camera work, make a pool game worthy of the colosseum. not to mention paul newman who makes 'sexy' a new word entirely. the 80s reverberate in every frame, just as does sophisticated, fully bodied cinematic style of mr scorcese.

Good film, however it is more about pool than 'The Hustler' resulting in a less emotional connection to Fast Eddie. Despite this the film entertains and has a decent storyline.

  • Not-so Fast Eddie

Cocksure Cruise and Fast Eddie had originally led me to expect great things.

Unfortunately, Cocksure got on my nerves, and Fast Eddie wasn't so fast, and I'm unsure why Newman won an Oscar for this film, when he's done so many others that are so much better.

The great expectations didn't materialise, and it's one to be filed under 'Watched, but not to be watched again'
