    [Highly rated reviewer]

I rate John Hurt as a fine actor and his performance in The Commmissioner has done nothing to dispel that, however, on the whole I found the film lacking. The plot, a little weak, requires you to keep your wits about you to remember who is who. If it hadn't been for Hurt's performance I don't think that I would have stayed the course with this film

Why did John Hurt waste his time with this film? I ordered it because of his reputation and it failed to deliver-uninteresting and far fetched -it was too long.

  • Little seen, underrated political thriller

    Rated - 3.0 stars

This has most of the hallmarks of a good political thriller and had it been less of a europudding it might have achieved this.

Hurt is excellent as a cabinet minister forced to resign and take up a less desirable post in Brussels. Indeed, this was very much a prototype for his role as Alan Clarke. Most of the relatively unknown supporting cast are fine and the intrigue keeps one guessing throughout.

However, the lacklustre directing, choppy editing and oppressively intrusive incidental music take the gloss off an otherwise fine little film ideally suited to home viewing.
