Compelling

I found the first few episodes a little slow, but as the series progressed, the depth and attention to detail given to the characters in the first episodes pays off brilliantly. The main character 'Soames' developes into a towering performance of complexity and as a snapshot of victorian life and values is exceptional.- Was this review helpful to you?

(22)Soames 1 Irene 0
By BeckyJo (19 reviews) , 09 Mar 2013Excellently made and really enjoyable. Damian Lewis is a corker as Soames but but BUT I just couldn't buy into Gina McKee as Irene. I really tried! I know she her 'reserved, at arm's length' demeanour is the point / as a result of the story, but ultimately I thought her performance was just plain DULL. What a shame because other than that...BRILL!- Was this review helpful to you?

British Drama Classic
By NurseBetty (5 reviews) , 12 Dec 2012A classic story with an excellent cast. The tale of a fictional English family set after the 1st world war deals both old and modern relationship issues. An excellent turn from Gina McKee and Damian Lewis.- Was this review helpful to you?

Loved it!
By oddsbodds (1 review) from Dundee , 07 May 2010This is Period Drama at it absolute best.
Everything about this was slick - from the genuis casting, the amazing costumes, the location and the brilliant production.
Damian Lewis as Soames was outstanding!
As a period drama freak this is up there with the best (..just behind Bleak house!).
You will watch this and be completely transported. Get the wine and nibbles in...and enjoy!- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent series, well-worth watching.
By a customer from London , 04 May 2010I watched the entire series over several weeks and found myself wanting more when it ended. Top-notch cast, settings, costumes and superb writing make it a thoroughly enjoyable series. It made me laugh and cry and I grew to care quite alot about all the main characters. I know I will watch it again in a few years time as I haven't seen anything this satisfying in years.- Was this review helpful to you?
