bertolucci's masterpiece
By conformist (24 reviews) from Ulverston , 05 Apr 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
an astounding mix of visual splendour and gripping action, this adaptation of moravia's novel works on numerous levels - political thriller, parade of amazing images (filmed by the same cinematographer who worked on 'Apocalypse Now' and unsparring depiction of the surrender of the weak to the appeal of fascism. Worth seeing for Trintignant's performance alone, there are numerous set-pieces (especially the cafe scene) which are unsurpassed.- Was this review helpful to you?

(17)This is hard to watch now
By Woolbridge (8 reviews) , 20 Apr 2013This is hard to watch now; although it seemed great at the time. The theatricality of the lighting and the sets and the Marxist self-righteous script seem odd & outdated now. What was also annoying were the wooden female characters all in Biba outfits and pencil line eyebrows. I kept thinking this is set in 1969 and not in the 1940's.- Was this review helpful to you?

Classic Film Noir With Italian Style
By Willber (1 review) , 22 Mar 2013Fans of American crime dramas such as The Godfather and Once Upon a Time in America will love this Italian gem. Although it doesn't quite sit with the all time greats in the tightness of its script or the pathos of its drama, this film has stunning visual flair and a gripping plot. The films intellectual concerns with the weakness of individuals scarred by experience and the allure of fascism play out amongst the white marble edifices, grey rain slicked streets and dimly lit rooms of 1940's Italy and France. These settings are captured with masterfully framed and expertly photographed shots that will make this Italian vision appeal to lovers of cinema everywhere.- Was this review helpful to you?

Weird genius
By a customer , 27 Feb 2013Beautiful cinematography and a strange, thematically ambivalent story. The blu-ray transfer is impressive, but it does make the post-synched audio more obvious (it was standard practice in Italian cinema to record the entire dialogue track after filming was completed). I have no Italian, but I have read that the subtitling is a bit poor in places. Not a film for everyone, but essential viewing if you care about Cinema history.- Was this review helpful to you?

Tedious in the extreme - avoid it!
By a customer , 27 Feb 2013This movie is all style and no content. It looks good and, like another pretentious but turgid political movie of the 1970s, Stavisky, seems to have put amajor portion of its budget into costumes. It's a pity that more of the money wasn't put into a more intelligent script, or one that doesn't proceed at such a glacial pace. Not a single one of the characters is credible as regards either motivation or personality and one frankly does not care abut them. I stuck it out for about an hour but after enduring so much tedium I decided to do something better with my time. My advice is to avoid it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Mind-blowingly good
By angelic (8 reviews) from London , 20 Jan 2013Brilliant film - mesmerising and works on a number of levels. Be sure your sins will find you out...It develops its complex themes well and concisely, and the characters are real and captivating, not mere cyphers in a piece of agit prop. I first saw this 40 years ago, and it totally blew me away. Watching it now makes me remember why.- Was this review helpful to you?
