  • Average sums up this film, in a kindly way; it's not bad : worth watching once.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

It would be hilarious to think of this offering as a 5 star film; but, though it'll never set the world on fire, it's not bad ; worth watching if you're in the mood for this type of film. My wife and I both agreed that it was quite watchable and deserves an average 3 star rating. The plot is thin but ambles along quite well. The acting is just average, except perhaps for Bridges' good over-acted role as US President ( which is just how it needed to be played). Worth a watch but make sure you're in the mood for the US political jungle and make sure you haven't got a film available that looks as though it might beat this average 3 star vehicle.

  • An Excellent Film With a Well-written Plot

This is a brilliant film, which keeps you interested despite a difficult subject -politics. Such a subject is hard to find and therefore the film is rather psychological than action-driven. However, a remarkable cast and impeccable writing make it the best film in this genre I have seen lately. Compared to the heap of rubbish which is released these days, you won't lose your time watching this.

  • Made-for-T.V type of movie.

Good story but, it's been done before far too many times. It is well acted which makes up for the dull storyline. It's worth watching just the once if there is truly nothing else to watch on the T. V.

  • Surprisingly watchable

I am not a keen follower of American politics and thought that I might fall asleep half way in a movie which was about the tussle between Democrats and Republicans as well as the discomfort amongst the ruling sexist elite to extend their club to the female population. However, the story becomes more and more engaging as the movie progresses, and highlights the double standards in our society towards gender stereotyping. That said, I think the movie remains guilty of double standards as it remains tightly obsessed about the VP's scandalous sexual past from the beginning till the end, despite it's constant message that a female politician candidate's personal life should matter as much (or as little) as a male candidate's. Joan Allen, Gary Oldman and Jeff Bridges display incredible acting talent, very matured, intellectual and nuanced. Gary Oldman especially, such a versatile actor who can command any roles with equal proficiency!

  • The Contender - solid film - good entertainment

Strong performance from Joan Allen and Gary Oldman. Amazing how Gary Oldman is the master of accents other than his own British one. Jeff Bridges somewhat credible as President but not at the top of his game (was fantastic in Arlington Road). Good story, love Sam Elliott, he's got gravitas....
