The Core

Weird phenomena lead a brilliant geophysics professor, Dr. Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart), to the discovery that the Earth's core has stopped revolving, ultimately resulting in severe natural disasters and radiation akin to that of a microwave--and the end of the world. Keyes' worst fears are confirmed by superstar scientist Dr. Conrad Zimsky (Stanley Tucci), who turns to his former partner, Dr. Ed Brazzleton (Delroy Lindo), who has devoted twenty years to creating a ship that can journey to the center of the Earth. The U.S. government, whose secret experiments, unbeknownst to all of the team but Zimzky, may have caused the problem, builds the ship at record speed and sends a team in to set off nuclear bombs that will restart the core. Astronauts Colonel Robert Iverson (Bruce Greenwood) and Major Rebecca Childs (Hilary Swank), and a nuclear weapons specialist, Dr. Serge Leveque (Tcheky Karyo) are also assigned to the mission, which promises both spectacular discoveries and tremendous danger. Witty one-liners save the film from taking itself too seriously while the special effects keep the action exciting. Directed by Jon Amiel (COPYCAT, ENTRAPMENT), THE CORE also stars Alfre Woodard, DJ Qualls, and Richard Jenkins.

Having exhausted the more traditional threats to human existence (asteroids, volcanos, large boats sinking), the Hollywood disaster movie now moves on to positively esoteric cataclysms: in this case the Earth's core ceasing — for reasons just barely explained — to rotate. While international landmarks explode and surface-dwellers face terminal sunburn, a secret team of top scientists builds a burrowing machine designed to penetrate the core and set it spinning again. Best described as Journey to the Center of the Earth meets Armageddon, this is by-the-numbers movie-making, but it has enough excitingly staged set pieces to offset the daft plot. Aaron Eckhart — on sabbatical from the more sober likes of In the Company of Men — puts in a pleasing turn as a boffin recruited to save the planet, while the excellent Stanley Tucci is amusingly slimy as his duplicitous colleague.

Mother Earth gets her own back!

This film is not all about the special effects - spectacular as they are! They were so good that I was squirming in my seat because I could almost feel the heat! This is all about the characters - the heroes and heroines who you can identify and sympathise with. There is always the one character who really makes you want to reach into your screen and pop him one on the chin and Stanley Tucci plays him with gusto - so much that he really irritated me (but don't you just love it! ) Delroy Lindo plays a strong role with bite - the down-trodden genius scientist with heart - more for him and less of the gangster/cop type roles he usually picks. Each character gets their moment in the light so you get to know and empathise with them a little. In this action packed adventure a group of odd-balls try to save the world, when Mother Earth lets us knows she's had enough of us, so there is the underlying Eco-Warrior aspect. The technology employed to persuade you of this fact is so believable, you can just imagine a 'Virgil' is locked up in some government facility somewhere in the world waiting for the day...

    Only for Sci-Fi fans

This movie is an original storyline but executed in a completely cliché manner. Sci-Fi fans will find this entertaining because like all good sci-fi movies you love to pick at the scientific impossibilities. There are some nice twists to the story and it makes you wonder what really is at the core of the earth. Don’t rent this if you are not a sci-fi fan because you will find it boring. I being a sci-fi fan loved it.
