Most helpful review The Corporation

  • Bloated tabloid tosh

    [Highly rated reviewer]

If you're looking for an incisive, intelligent documentary on the disasters that can be caused by big business, watch Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. This film, on the other hand, is confused, contradictory, bloated, (weighing in at a whopping 2h 21m,) and has no real points to make. It runs around, wildly pointing the finger at anyone and everyone in big business who has, in the past, taken part in some dubious practices, which makes for lots of easy targets because that's pretty much everyone. It cops out and chooses this route rather than attempt to make any constructive suggestions as to how industry can realistically move forward without us all losing our jobs, (don't forget that even if you don't work for a big corporation, most of your cash will still probably come from one or more somewhere up the line,) strong economies becoming weakened and everyone going back to living in shacks. (Remember Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge pals? Their working co-operative ideas didn't work out so well, did they?)

Scratch the surface of this film, beyond some sickeningly abused visuals used solely for emotional effect, (the woman in audience seen gulping during big meeting almost certainly didn't happen at the point it was shown; excessive use of concentration camp footage,) and The Corporation holds no more credibility than the cheesy corporate identity ads put out by those they are trying to discredit. Amateur journalism at its worst.

  • Speakers like Noam Chomsky and Naomi Klein...

    Rated - 4.5 stars

Watch this film - as long as you have 2'24' to spare. Yes, its a long, American doc with an US style, which, I often find slightly emotive. But essentially it's extremely informative and has some amazing people speaking (including Naomi Klein and Noam Chomsky). I believe it tries to give a balanced view but this can be misinterpreted as 'confused'... I like the way they have a lot of people from large corporations talking too. We might not agree with everything that's being said but I advise: Watch it and make your own mind up.

  • Interesting idea, confused execution

Despite comments by others, I largely agree with the 'Most helpful review'. This documentary is not wrong, it's just confused. It's not that it doesn't have some reasonable points to make, just that it's trying to make too many loosely connected points all at one. For example, there are many interviews with prominent persons in this piece, but often these interviews are cut down to one or two sentences. Like the directors don't have the attention span to listen to the whole thing. The problem is not enough focus. As they show, there are a wealth of examples of corporate mismanagement, but they never stop more than a minute or so on any given one, and never delve deep enough to look at the specific causes or things that could have been done to avoid this (and the impact these might have had). Instead they are satisfied to just go 'look here's another corporate mistake', presumably implying we'd be better off without them. Basically, as much as I find issue with much of corporate behaviour, I don't understand what a version of our society without corporations (or some similar construct) would look like and this film didn't help clarify that point.

We are running out of fish. Education in this country cost the average student 40 thousand in debt because loans are privatised. The NHS is being sold under our noses. So please don't listen to the most helpful review! Yes there is dramatic music and a sense of dread tone through the film which could be construed as manipulation but there should be dread. WE are raping the world of all it has and this film goes some way to explaining why that is happening. Of course we all need jobs but do we all need profit! You decide after viewing this thought provoking detailed film that asks many questions that the world must find answers to.

informative. intelligent. bit long could have conveyed the same ideas in 1 hour and half. bit dated though, does not mention anything about financial institutions, this is a 2003 production...

2 hrs 24 mins hardly seems long enough to document the dark shadow corporations cast over every facet of our lives these days. Those already dancing to the glitch advertising tune will probably find it hard to focus, but they are a lost cause anyway. It shocked me that corporations have the same legal rights as people but take on none of the responsibilities. I've long suspected that the world is run by psychos for psychos and The Corporation confirms this in chilling detail. I was heartened seeing the positive effect community action and grassroots campaigns were having despite the staggering odds. Go the Seed Savers in India! I'm also remembering that David did indeed defeat Goliath...
