It's very easy to go for cheap laughs about these low budget 1940s horror films, but let's try to be positive. The plot may be more full of holes than a sieve, the direction static, the dialogue uninspired and the acting perfunctory - although there is an exceptionally sparky leading lady in this - but the lighting! Watch for the scene in which Lugosi emerges from the back of a hearse, his fully lit face hovering like a gibbous moon against the black of the car door. Look for scenes in which carved wood panneling or the shimmering folds of the heroine's dressing gown as she descends stairs into a cellar catch and diffuse light making the darkness seem even deeper, and for the way in which shadows are created. These are effects which can not be effectively duplicated in colour film and which produce a frisson out of all proportion to the generally poor production values.
