Masterly suspense for 6 hours plus
By a customer from Hampshire, England , 25 Jan 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
If you're in to adventure and suspense this French made masterpiece (English subtitles) is for you. Originally shown on TV, the plots in the book are faithfully followed. It's gripping from beginning to end, plus occasional dark humour. Shows what European artistry can do at its best.- Was this review helpful to you?

(39)One of the best
By a customer , 22 Feb 2013I absolutely loved this. Great suspense, beatufifully scenic, excellent story line and even a little bit educational. I didn't want it to end!- Was this review helpful to you?

Very poor portrayal of a fantastic book
By Whybs (2 reviews) , 18 Oct 2012Having read the book this portrayal is totally lacking. After being in prison for 18 years Dantes (Depardieu) really ought to look somewhat drawn and weak . . . Not like a rather well fed actor! I just found the whole thing very poor in terms of the way the story is presented.
The way the timeline is manipulated is also unnecesary and detracts from the story.
A fantastic book, but a very weak portrayal. Didn't bother ordering the remainder of the series.- Was this review helpful to you?

I'll be back
By Thirstybob (11 reviews) , 20 Apr 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
This is long, two discs with effectively two films per disc. Probably enough for a whole week's viewing for many people.
The acting is impeccable, Depardieu is a perfect Monte Cristo. The sense of menacing intent for revenge is spot on. All the other actors are excellent as well.
To an extent this reminded me of the BBC's recent version of Bleak House with Gillian Anderson et al in the all round high quality of the production.
What can I criticise? Little considering I enjoyed it so much. Perhaps there was one too many scenes that started with the arrival of a carrriage and horses. The lingo is antiquated, a bit too much 'ce que voues dites' going on, but what do I expect considering the time it was set in?
Great film. Thoroughly recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?

Gripping period drama for all the family
By MaryC (23 reviews) from Oxford , 05 Sep 2011Despite its length and subtitles, this film held the attention of two adults and four children aged from 8-14. Gerard Depardieu was excellent throughout and the twists and turns kept us enthralled. One of the best family films we've watched.- Was this review helpful to you?
