But The Cowboys gave him one of the most juiciest as a leather-tough rancher who, deserted by his regular help, hires 11 greenhorn schoolboys for a cattle drive across 400 treacherous miles. When the dust settled, Wayne had given one of his best performances. "In The Cowboys", Rex Reed wrote "all the forces that have made him a dominant personality as well as a major screen presence seem to combine. Old Dusty Britches can act". John Wayne hires a group of schoolboys to help him on a cattle drive in this morose, awkwardly paced and overlong would-be epic western. In truth, this rite-of-passage saga just doesn't work, owing to a cumbersome structure and a rather nauseating pro-violence, revenge-is-good message. On the plus side, Bruce Dern and Slim Pickens are good to watch, and Roscoe Lee Browne and Colleen Dewhurst add thespian dignity. But the movie isn't worthy of Wayne, and is indicative of his lack of luck finding strong material following his True Grit Oscar.

WHY?
That is what I have to ask myself, Why? why has it taken so long to bring this brilliant John Wayne movie to DVD it should have been out years ago, John plays the usual grumpy hard nose rancher but this time has children as the butt for his temper (albeit good natured)the story of the children trying to be cowhands and succeeding is in parts hilarious and in others sad and heartrending but always entertaining. If you are a Duke fan this is a must rent!

Favreau to take on Cowboys and Aliens?

Director Jon Favreau is in talks to reteam with Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. for a new comic book adaptation of Cowboys And Aliens. Downey Jr. has been linked to the project for over a year, but production has been delayed because studio bosses have yet to appoint a filmmaker to helm the movie.
