Winner of both the Palme d'Or and Best Actress Award at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival as well as two BAFTA nominations in 1959, The Cranes are Flying is a masterpiece of visual storytelling, and was one of the first post-war Soviet films to receive international acclaim.

It is a tragic World War Two story of two young lovers forced apart when Boris (Aleksei Batalov) goes to fight at the Russion front against the Germans without time to say his farewells to Veronica (Tatyana Samojlova). While he faces the horrors of the front line, Veronica has her own battle at home, losing her parents in a bombing raid as well as dealing with the amorous advances of Boris' draft-dodging cousin and all the while failing to discover the note Boris had left for her.
