It's a wonderful technicolour extravaganza that deserves the full treatment from Warner Bros. Unfortunately, what we have here is another dreadful bootleg from Orbit Media. Avoid like the plague and hope that Warner will release an official DVD sometime soon.

If you want swashbuckling action and a film you can all sit down to enjoy, then this is it. The tone is that of a sunday afternoon matinee (just be wary if you're watching with little ones that there there is a scene towards the end where a prisoner is being lashed)

The acting is full of energy, the music is amongst some of the best ever written and the action is non-stop.

I totally recommend this film, however I should point out that the 5 stars are only for the actual film. The quality of the DVD issue is awful and does not do the film justice at all.

  • Classic Adventure

    Rated - 5.0 stars

This tongue in cheek pirate yarn is one of the great family adventure films of all time. A stunningly acrobatic and charming Burt Lancaster and his former circus act partner Nick Cravat star as two daredevil pirates whose gun running schemes come unstuck in the face of a beautiful woman. There's comic sequences, thrilling stunts in the rigging, ship to ship action, a nutty scientist, a full blown revolution and even a youthful Christopher Lee as the henchman of a corrupt Governor. This movie has everything and wasn't bettered until Raiders of the Lost Ark. Sadly this feature has yet to be remastered and released by the original production house and this cheapo Orbit media DVD is far from the best quality.

  • Classic entertainment!

I remember watching this film a lot as a kid... Seeing it again after all these years was a delight - it's still great fun. Lancaster's acrobatic skills are put on full show, they just wouldn't let a movie star do this kind of thing today!

You can also see the massive influence this film had on the makers of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films...

The only negative I would give this is that this classic film could really do with a full restoration job done on it. The picture is a little too soft in places and the sound is not too good at all, I've seen films made around this time (1952) in much better condition so it's certainly possible... Look at 'North by Northwest' to see how gorgeous a film can look after some serious restoration work!
