The film adaptation of Arthur Miller's classic, fact-based play, which was a veiled metaphor for the "Red Scare" McCarthy Hearings of the 1950s. Set in 1690s Salem, Massachusetts, the story concerns Abigail (Ryder), a teenager who once had an affair with married farmer John Proctor (Day-Lewis). Their relationship comes to an end, however, when his wife Elizabeth (Joan Allen) learns about it. One night, in the woods, Abigail and a group of girls undress and engage in a ritualistic ceremony, during which Abigail puts a deadly curse on Elizabeth. But when this revelry is brought to light, the shocked villagers come to believe that Satan is in their town. A witch hunt begins, with arrests, trials and burnings at the stake in store for many of the accused girls. Furthermore, the affair between John and Abigail does not escape scrutiny. Featuring a powerful performance from Paul Scofield as the Judge.

Arthur Miller's emotionally raw play about suspected witchcraft in 17th-century Massachusetts — the author and screenwriter's veiled attack on the McCarthy-inspired communist witch-hunts of the 1950s — is here brilliantly brought to the screen by director Nicholas Hytner (The Madness of King George). Daniel Day-Lewis is characteristically intense as the married man caught in the middle, but the real fireworks come from Winona Ryder, as the wicked young girl whose manipulative behaviour is the story's catalyst, and Paul Scofield, who is a commanding presence as the trial's judge. Hytner maintains a believable period flavour throughout and successfully evokes the stifling atmosphere of fear and suspicion in Salem — the film's final third, as reputations are ruined and scapegoats are sought, is absolutely electrifying.
Powerful historical drama of the power of superstition when allied to the processes of an inquisition, though it has lost some of its contemporary relevance along the way.
A wonderful re-enactment of Arthur Millers Classic Play.
Highlights the witch hunts of Salem and the McCarthy era in the 1950s very well.
it was a great representation of the 17th century witchcrafts in salem small town of Massachussets..the power of ur conscience is best depicted in the character of John Proctor.
It has been announced that Paddy Considine is to join the cast of The Bourne Ultimatum, the third instalment of the spy series starring Matt Damon as amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne. Considine, who featured in Brit flicks 24 Hour Party People and My Summer of Love, has signed on to play a supporting role in the thriller which follows on from The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy. In slightly more unusual news, the star of the Saw horror franchise will create a buzz for the third... Read more
