Entertainment 2 - 1 Accuracy

This is not really a football film. It is a film about egos, self-destruction and love. That said, I'm not sure a viewer would be quite as quickly drawn in to it without at least some idea of who Brian Clough and Don Revie were (even though the film does do its best to explain this and give a good idea of what it meant for Brian Clough to be appointed Leeds United manager in 1974 after Don Revie's departure).
The positives are: a truly terrific performance by Michael Sheen (not simply because he does seem to be Brain Clough, but because of the humour, warmth and internal conflicts he shows within the man); a really strong supporting cast; and an amusing script.
The negatives have to be that I left the cinema still feeling that I did not really understand what caused the self-destructive demons with Brian Clough, and that I had been shown a decent tale at the expense of great dollops of truth or detail.- Was this review helpful to you?

Remembering 'them furious times'

A time when football was a yobs game but which tugged on the heart strings of the civic mass who put up with the lousy pitches, the terrible fouls and the moments of genius which lit up the 70s and 80s. It took me back and I was happy to go. Mind you .. did Brian's accent really wobble around like this?- Was this review helpful to you?

By AndrewDrisc (8 reviews) from Merthyr Tydfil , 24 Jan 2013The damned United is a fictionalised/dramatised representation of the 44 day period spent by Brian Clough in charge of Leeds United. How close to the truth I couldn't say as I wasn't there.
It also covers his successes at Derby and relationships with characters such as his long time assistant Peter Taylor
To be honest the film is about rivalry and ego, the fact that it's set over the background of football clubs shouldn't deter non-football fans from watching. I think the film sets out to explore what drives an individual such as Clough on. Success? Attention? Fame?
The acting is top rate, Michael Sheen is, as usual is outstanding, Colm Meany is quite eerie in his resemblance to Reevie, in general the cast are superb and the acting helps drive the film along. The setting is perfect and really gives a sense of the time. I'm not sure it shows off the football very well, but as I said, this isn't a film about football
Not all of the characters come across well, in particular some of the Leeds players and at times 'Clough' himself are made out to be bad guys. It's easy to see how several of the people resembled heer wouldn't be very happy with the film!
Overall this is a very enjoyable film, as long as you remember this isn't supposed to be a documentary and while based around real events, isn't fact.- Was this review helpful to you?

Even if you don't like footy
