Entertainment 2 - 1 Accuracy

This is not really a football film. It is a film about egos, self-destruction and love. That said, I'm not sure a viewer would be quite as quickly drawn in to it without at least some idea of who Brian Clough and Don Revie were (even though the film does do its best to explain this and give a good idea of what it meant for Brian Clough to be appointed Leeds United manager in 1974 after Don Revie's departure).
The positives are: a truly terrific performance by Michael Sheen (not simply because he does seem to be Brain Clough, but because of the humour, warmth and internal conflicts he shows within the man); a really strong supporting cast; and an amusing script.
The negatives have to be that I left the cinema still feeling that I did not really understand what caused the self-destructive demons with Brian Clough, and that I had been shown a decent tale at the expense of great dollops of truth or detail.- Was this review helpful to you?

(264)Absolutely Brilliant
By andy2560 (6 reviews) from Stafford , 12 Sep 2011Graet film especially if you have and intense interest in football. However this is not necessary to appreciate the film. Watching Brain Cloughs ego was amazing and questioned how he managed to stay in management so long.

Ole Big Ead returns.
By BMidland (141 reviews) from Walsall , 20 Jul 2011The best sports films are the ones that incorporate little to no actual sport whatsoever.
So we have The Damned United, close to being one of the most perfect sports films ever made.
Michael Sheen is the perfect embodiment of Brian Clough and invests real warmth and passion in the role of the man who was the best manager England never had.
The direction is tight and the whole thing moves along at a cracking pace that you don't notice the running time.
A wonderful film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Surprisingly good
By a customer , 08 Jun 2011Not a film I would normally have rented, but really enjoyed it - despite not really looking forward to it. I think because it is so totally different to the usual murder/mystery/macho films it made interesting viewing.- Was this review helpful to you?
