The Darjeeling Limited

Three American brothers who have not spoken to each other in a year set off on a train voyage across India with a plan to find themselves and bond with each other -- to become brothers again like they used to be. Their "spiritual quest", however, veers rapidly off-course (due to events involving over-the-counter pain killers, Indian cough syrup, and pepper spray), and they eventually find themselves stranded alone in the middle of the desert with eleven suitcases, a printer, and a laminating machine. At this moment, a new, unplanned journey suddenly begins.

    Very limited indeed

I watched this film without ever having heard of it at all and was drawn in by the creds of its director, plus the Wilson brother combo, whose eccentricity I normally find mildly entertaining.

This film, on the other hand, drags on, and on, and on. In fact, it's as slow as the train depicted in the impoverished storyline. Sadly, the whimsical attempts at creating an arthouse film are not enough to hold it all together either.

This film is dull and tries far too hard to be clever in an understated manner. It's just plain boring, and also happens to make India and its people look like a bunch of backward idiots.

Firstly, don't miss the supporting film. Hotel Chevalier is a 13-minute short starring Jason Schwarztman and Natalie Portman, and it serves as the perfect appetizer for the main feature. Set in a Parisian hotel room, it's a very slight story about a man preparing for the arrival of a female friend. Schwartzman's character isn't named here, but to all intents and purposes he's the same Jack who reappears in The Darjeeling Limited, and this must be the ex-girlfriend he's running away from.
