  • 5 stars out of 5

    By Darren Bignell from LOVEFiLM

The final film of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises delivers in an utterly satisfying way.

I really wanted to like it - really - because I loved The Dark Knight. I even saw TDK Rises twice to make sure I wasn't missing anything. However, what I got was a fat heap of disappointment (twice) with a film that had massive potential to begin with, then flushed it down the loo like a giant bat-turd.

It's not that It's really a bad film, it just tries too hard to outdo the other two; in trying to make it bigger, bolder and louder, it actually dumbs-down the characterisation and tight scripting we have become used to from Chris Nolan et al. I somehow got the feeling that halfway through, the film began to take itself a bit too seriously. By the end, we have just another mano-a-mano scrap between hero and villain, and a siege scenario where there was little sense of peril or tension.

Script-wise, there was far too much exposition, and not enough of the humour and spark that the film began with between Selena Kyle and Batman / Bruce Wayne. Similarly, the flashes of thematic brilliance regarding Capitalism and its victims and perpetrators in the first half of the film are lost by the end when things start exploding. A pity, since that actually began to give the film depth and relevance, resonating with the current economic situation.

It isn't a complete disaster. The first fateful clash between Bane and the Bat is brutal; the single voice of the child singing the national anthem before the ensuing carnage is poignant, and the character of Selena Kyle is gripping in the first half. Too bad it couldn't be sustained.

In the end, it was a lumbering colossus of po-faced mediocrity. I wanted it so badly to stand up to its predecessors.

Brilliant film. Great fun, quite spooky and quite long but it kept me awake which is a great achievement for me.

Don't believe the hype! Overlong and disappointing latest episode in the franchise. Bane is extremely annoying and sounds like Sean Connery. Compared to the excellent previous movie this is a damp squib. Waste of 2hrs 37 of my life. Avoid!!!

An excellent film from start to finish. However as with the last The Dark Knight the villain made the film. Bane is a fantastic nemesis and an all round nut job. And his voice is wicked cool
