The basic facts are well-known, but director John Gray digs a bit deeper and comes up with a very modern political thriller. He is also rewarded by some audacious against-type casting, with Lance Henriksen surprisingly convincing as the war-weary Lincoln, and Northern Exposure's Rob Morrow believably psychotic as his nemesis, John Wilkes Booth. The story opens with Confederate sympathiser Wilkes's plan to kidnap the president being foiled by the South's surrender. His attention then switches to the assassination, with Gray deftly switching between his protagonists as they move closer to their fateful rendezvous.
