When the Americans test a nuclear weapon at the South Pole at the exact moment that the Soviets are testing their own weapon at the North, the earth's axis is jolted out of alignment, causing catastrophic changes in global weather patterns. Additionally, the earth has been dislodged from its orbit, and is now hurtling towards the sun. It's a race against time as the world prepares for additional nuclear detonations which could restore life as we know it. This classic piece of British science fiction won a British Academy Award for Best Screenplay and has been completely restored by Anchor Bay, including tinted sequences not seen since the movie's original theatrical release in 1961.

Atomic explosions at the two poles put the Earth on a collision course with the Sun in this bleak British doomsday vision. With the emphasis on the reactions of some London journalists to the impending catastrophe rather than elaborate special effects, this tautly intelligent sci-fi thriller hits all the right buttons, helped by a script full of fatalistic quips and apocalyptic cynicism. Engrossing, with a memorable fade-out on two possible newspaper headlines.
A smart piece of science fiction told through the eyes of Fleet Street journalists and showing a sharp eye for the London scene. Rather exhaustingly talkative, but genuinely frightening at the time.
Not only an enjoyable Sci-Fi yarn but a fascinating look at how the world was 40 years ago. Parts of the film are a little mawkish but don't let that put you off. A good use of tinting of the black and white print at certain moments adds atmosphere.
The DVD features deleted scenes, one of which is a musical number!
