    [Highly rated reviewer]

The Day Of The Triffids has to be one of the best sci-fi books I've ever read, and continues to be hugely influential to this day, not just in print but on celluloid as well (see 28 Days Later).

Unfortunately, this film adaptation doesn't really do the book justice, and the main problem watching this now is just how dated it looks. To be fair, transferring the story to screen would be a tough job in any era (just how do you make plants look scary?!), but the quaint and old fashioned dramatic devices employed here don't really cut it these days.

In my view, this story is just begging to be 'reimagined' 21st century style, perhaps with somebody like Sam Raimi at the helm.

Love it, mass hysteria and blood curdling screams. some of the scenes in the dark were a bit hard to view, but it was definitely worth a watch.. Quality!!!

Problem with this is that how do you make flesh eating plants to uproot themselves and look credible in the book, when they look convincing on screen. And then the plot kind of gets shaky. Watch the film and then read the book if you can. John Wyndham wrote better stories that this one I think.

I don't know what the quality of the original source material was, but the image quality on this dvd is very poor - best avoided. Why not try the 1981 BBC TV series - by far the best adaptation so far.

  • Veg that walks

It don't sing and dance and it don't talk, but this is a veg that loves to walk, sadly not straight on to your plate, thus reducing its carbon footprint.

After a Meteor shower has blinded most of the worlds population, a plant in Kew gardens develops a fondness for exercise and the taste for human flesh.

This is a story which shouldn't work, especially as the 60's Hollywood B film treatment tampers heavily with the original book, but still the magic of its authors pen shines through and it scares the pants out of the whole family, especially if that family happens to be called Titchmarsh.
