Take another glance at the title of this Romanian film and you have its story, climax and all: Mr Lazarescu will die.... read more on Time Out
On the surface this documentary style film, which follows an increasingly ailing and lonely old man though the machinations of the health service, sounds incredibly tedious. It is, however, one of the most captivating and touching movies I've ever seen, and not without its moments of dark humour. A film that does not shy away from the indignities of death and the importance of compassion. One of my top ten films ever.
I cannot see how this can be billed as a comedy by any stretch of the imagination! The best word for it would be 'compelling'. The poor old boy who is pushed from one A&E to the next wrenches ones heart, the ambulance technician who looks after him and tries to defend and help him deserves all the love and respect one can muster. A sad sorry tale, thankfully filmed in Bucharest, not London.
