A most unlikely masterpiece
By a customer from London, England , 02 Aug 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
On the surface this documentary style film, which follows an increasingly ailing and lonely old man though the machinations of the health service, sounds incredibly tedious. It is, however, one of the most captivating and touching movies I've ever seen, and not without its moments of dark humour. A film that does not shy away from the indignities of death and the importance of compassion. One of my top ten films ever.- Was this review helpful to you?

Simply a Masterpiece!
By simple_one (2 reviews) , 18 Sep 2012Touching and emotional story. Makes you think about people that are left on their own without anyone caring about them. Beautiful camerawork which makes the film even more realistic and drags you in to the story.- Was this review helpful to you?

An interesting film
By Sef (15 reviews) from Lancaster , 08 May 2012I found this film totally believable. The experience of being old, alone and ill is not pleasant and this old man's journey to get treatment is not always easy to watch but it's not sensationalised. The medical practitioners are a mixture of good and bad, caring and uncaring - that's how it is.- Was this review helpful to you?

And you worry about NHS reforms.
By Oldbloke (308 reviews) from Sidmouth , 12 Mar 2012Mr Lazarescu is a widower, who lives in a dingy flat in Bucharest with only his mangy cats for company. One night he becomes ill with a headache and sickness, which may or may not be related to the cheap hooch that he drinks. His neighbours try to help, but eventually he is taken away in an ambulance. He is rapidly diagnosed as a lost cause, whose poor health is largely his own fault and thereafter we follow the patient and his long suffering paramedic as they are sent from one hopital to another in search of the life saving operation that he needs. Completely mis-sold as a comedy, this is a long documentary style road-trip through the Rumanian night. It's fascinating, true to life, full of interesting characters but definitely not for all tastes.- Was this review helpful to you?
