In the absence of regular partner James Ivory, producer Ismail Merchant has managed to miss both the rousing adventure and the intriguing ideas contained in John Masters's novel of cultism and culture clash. Part of the problem lies with director Nicholas Meyer, who is unsure whether to opt for mini-series glossiness or schlock goriness as a secret cult is linked to a spate of murders that disturb the peace of 1820s India. But the weight of blame must fall on the performers, with usually dependable stalwarts like Saeed Jaffrey and Shashi Kapoor every bit as inanimate as the current 007, Pierce Brosnan, who looks neither shaken nor stirred throughout.

    Destruction of the Thugs

A film about the hindu and muslim Thugee sect in India which murdered and robbed travellers over many centuries in India. Membership and the secrets of the sect were passed down from father to son. The sect was eventually hunted down and disbanded by the British in the early 1800s. The modern English language word thug derives from the sect's name.

The KIWI shoe polish 'go native' disguise kit

This movie really deserves two stars or less but i had to give it an extra one just because of the fact that Pierce Brosnan (or Gopal the Weaver) manages to pass off as Indian with the help of brown shoe polish which never gives him away - like the smell wouldnt have given people a hint? also - it never comes off - not when he washes or has sex with a dancing girl. amazing stuff. the extra star is for the shoe polish!
