LOVEFiLM Review

By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM
Although Terence Davies' latest offering is a big disappointment for this reviewer, it's fair to say that sometimes the movies that stay with you longest are the ones that really rile you.

Three Way Love Triangle
By Carrington (5 reviews) from newbury, berkshire , 14 Apr 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
This latest version of Rattigan's play is dark, claustrophopic and often depressing as director Terence Davies tries to reproduce the gloomy atmosphere of London in the 1950s and at the same time show the pain suffered by Hester in her fierce love for ex RAF pilot Freddie and his indifference towards her. There are excellent performances byTom Hiddlestone as Freddie, Simon Russell Beale as the judge and deserted husband and particularly Rachel Weiss whose voice, carriage and facial expressions all convey her agony poignantly. She is truly caught between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.
The entire film is shot in dark, sombre, mainly night time hues and the only complaint I would make would be to point out that there were occasionally bright sunny days in 1950 although, as an atmospheric, painful love story, the film works very well indeed.- Was this review helpful to you?

It kept us watching
By Catinabox (40 reviews) , 18 Mar 2013Plays translated into films often struggle a bit to catch your attention, but Rachel Weisz and co did a pretty good job with this one. You have to be okay with a bit of melancholy. Good for a Sunday evening.- Was this review helpful to you?

Don't waste an evening
By JohnBCambs (1 review) , 18 Mar 2013This was rented based on someone's recommendation. It's a catalogue of grinding clichés, delivered with all the vibrancy and magnetism of cold risotto. I really don't understand how films like this get funding. I felt sorry for the actors, all of whom did a very good job.- Was this review helpful to you?

Watchable average film
By Bobsview (554 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 09 Mar 2013Romantic tragic drama set in 1950 about wealthy woman (Weisz) who has a steamy affair with an RAF Battle of Britain hero but who cannot commit to her or give her the love she craves. She is driven to despair and attempts suicide. A dark, sad , depressing, and joyless story. Weisz is superb but the film is not an enjoyable watch and you sort of end up wondering what was the point? Adaptation of a book and stageplay.- Was this review helpful to you?

Eminently watchable
By Arborbridge (35 reviews) , 14 Jan 2013I you like fast moving action don't watch this film. It is an eminently watchable arthouse film with brilliant and subtle acting from the principals. Much is communicated by looks and gestures, and the way the score is edited to these is remarkable in places, although since this was a pre-existing score, I wonder if they acted to the music when shooting. It's a truly wonderful play between the three characters and the sub-texts are reminiscent of Ibsen without his tragic endings.- Was this review helpful to you?
