Long and brilliant!
By Antony Leigh from Manchester, England , 08 Jan 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
Yes it maybe nearly 3 hours long but this is a brilliant film. The acting is dynamite. De Niro and Walken are fantastic, especially in the POW camp!
Almost every single aspect of this film is stunning. The direction, acting and photography all brilliant. The only problem is that it does tend to meander a little bit. Not enough to ruin the film but you know what I mean.
Very powerful and sad but extremely compelling. Great Vietnam flick! Almost as good as Apocalypse Now and better than Full Metal Jacket.- Was this review helpful to you?

By pompeyhater (15 reviews) , 14 Apr 2013Haunting and tragic. One of the best movies ever made. The acting and story telling are some of the best ever put on film. Five star movie all the way and for those who give it low marks should stick to watching children films.- Was this review helpful to you?

slow but interesting
By Paulband (5 reviews) , 25 Mar 2013By the finish I was disappointed. The story was just too lethargic for me. To its credit the scenery and photography is excellent and the acting from the main characters Streep and De Nero is very good. One reviewer claimed that this beats FMJ hand down. I strongly disagree because they are too different. FMJ is leagues ahead.- Was this review helpful to you?

Oh deer! A great film but tooooooo long!
By Bobsview (554 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 13 Mar 2013Hard hitting shocking story of group of friends before , during, and after the Vietnam war. Unforgettable. Would be a 9 but for the fact that the first half of the film is tooooo long and includes an entire wedding reception in real time- Was this review helpful to you?

A work of genius.
By 310396 (8 reviews) from Woking , 18 Jan 2013I've seen this several times and never make it past the russian roulette scene. I've been trying for thirty years but it is just too much. The realism, brutalism and nihilism of this film has haunted me for my adult life. That's why I'm going to get it out again and expose myself to the suffering once more.- Was this review helpful to you?

A gem hidden in the late 70s
By romeo7 (20 reviews) from London , 06 Aug 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
Away from Politics.... The film is fantastic. What made it so good is mainly the soundtrack. Acting comes second and it was very well done by all. I watched the film because of Meryl Streep but must admit Robert De Niro was magnificent. I have always watched his latest film but never thought I will see him so young :-) Quite handsome!. The first 1 hour was all singing and dancing and even that you think it is too long but was very enjoyable.- Was this review helpful to you?
