I can believe I have lived 28 years on this earth and not seen this film until now.

The film tells the story of 3 young men who are just about to embark on a tour of duty during the Vietnam War. It starts in their hometown with the marriage of Steven (John Savage) which is also a sending off party for the two other men Nick (Christopher Walken) and Michael (Robert De Niro). As the film develops, we experience first hand the brutality of war, famously demonstrated by their captors making the men play Russian roulette. All manage to survive the war but all bear different scars, both physical and mental.

De Niro and Walken are truly sensational in their roles. ably supported by Savage, Meryl Streep and an assortment of supporting actors. As a metaphor for the damaging effect war can have on men, this film is exceptional. I don't often give a film five stars (my first in 53 reviews) but his film truly deserves it.
