This is flawed. The ending is much too contrived, and leaves no room for any sceptical doubt. But it's still an interesting and ambitious effort, and should be seen (and will probably be appreciated) by anyone with a serious interest in horror films.

There is a compelling, charismatic performance (helped by sinisterly good lighting) at the heart by Billy Clarke, and the central monologue is a tour de force both by him and the scriptwriter. Shocking the audience with an unexpected loud noise is a bit of a horror cliche, but it's done here with intelligence and originality, and timed to microsecond perfection. There's plenty more nice touches, even in the overdone closing minutes.

Lots to enjoy, a few bits to admire, and I look forward to seeing more from this director/writer.

  • Killed List

The Devil's Business has taken some of the best ideas from the far superior Kill List and made a duller version of that film. I'm not familiar with the actors but the lead kept the same concerned expression on his face all the way through and the other guy just came across as annoying. Any attempt at building tension or suspence was a big failure. When the lead hitman is telling his scary story at the start I nearly fell asleep, it went on forever and had no point to it.

This is quite a talky film, but it is a refreshingly different take on the horror genre. It also produces some genuine scares and jumps. The small cast are very good, their dialogue is very 'real' and naturalistic. When something unpleasant happens to them - and it does - then it is genuinely affecting. There are also lines that are intentionally very funny. The casually intimidating lingo between the increasingly panicked gangsters, complete with expletives, provides a few chuckles in amongst the growing sense of unease. Strongly recommended. Remember - if you are going to commit a murder, don't leave your watch behind! (I had entitled this review 'Black Magic C*ckneys', but was cautioned that my review contained an obscene word!)

  • Give this movie a Big Miss, It's dreadful!!!

This must be the most boring movie i have ever watched. The start was ok but it just seriously went downhill after the first 15 minutes and even that was poor. The storyline was weak and insipid and went nowhere. As for the ending, I know it was low budget but the son was so unbelievable it hurt!!! Talk about Chucky doll like son but 100 times less realistic and you've got his son!!! It was so stupidly painfully boring and started nowhere went nowhere and finished nowhere. (going for a dump, I ask you!!!). Overall I think you've gathered so far it didn't go anywhere. This movie needs a big miss... x x x

This felt more like a media students end of year project than a professionally made film. The attempt at a moody atmosphere just doesn't work and the make up effects at the end of the film are laughable. Any comparisons to the far superior Kill List are way of the mark. Very poor.
