It’s long been assumed that the Nazis were secretly involved in the occult during World War II. True or not, it makes for a great story – think Raiders of the Lost Ark or The Keep? Well, here’s a new one, shot in New Zealand, by British visual effects designer turned director Paul Campion.

On the eve of the D-Day landings, two soldiers on a mission to blow up Nazi gun installations in the occupied Channel Islands decide to undertake a rescue mission on a bunker where they believe people are being tortured. But they discover something far more frightening… a Gestapo officer (tasked with raising the forces of Hell to fight for the Nazi cause) and his demon slave (which is trying to break free from its bonds). What follows is a wordy battle of wits as the men try to dispatch the manipulative satantic creature. To quote one of the Kiwi soldiers: ‘There’s bad sheeet going on here!’.

The Devil’s Rock is beautifully shot and well-acted, but is devoid of depth and decidedly short on action, thrills, shocks or surprises. Most of the film is made up of wordplay about faith and politics making it better suited to a radio play or, if shortened, to a horror anthology TV series. Gorehounds will also be disappointed to find only one cool fsx scene (involving a head being swallowed), plus the film is begging a nifty soundtrack.

The DVD includes an interesting making-of featurette in which the director, who mortgaged his house for this project, explains how he made the film (the creation of the gunshot sound effects is a highlight).

  • Taut and well made Occult Nazi Horror

There is a whole sub-genre of WWII occult/Nazi movies, and whereas most seem to be tongue-in-cheek mashups this one is serious and well made. Excellent DVD extras if you're interested about how independent film makers get to make small but lovingly crafted and professional-looking horror movies these days.

  • Competent, promising but ultimately Dull

Such a shame as this film could have been so promising but I have to conclude this isn't much cop at all. There are the odd moments of gruel but even these are not satisfying enough to keep you engrossed in my humblest opinion. The acting was very competent , the storyline original and the locality a change - the channel islands are a craggy depressing place so this was ideal as a backdrop and brought to realisation although the location was in fact New Zealand ( I have experience of this as I visited it last year and I have to conclude dear reader it is a bleak, bleak place with very little to do , the people are either ex-yuppies clinging on to their youth and snobbery or bewildered yokels who showed signs of slight interbreeding - enough of Jersey) . Anyway back to the movie despite many good points it just doesn't seem to raise it above the dull stage. I hope to see more from the director but hope for something much betetr next time around as obviusly the potential is there. Would also liked to have seen Karlos Drinkwater being utilised better , he is stunning looking and a competent actor only to be bumped off in the beginning - why ?? I also felt the use of being shot on video another hinder than help and would have liked some grain to be added as , despite the odd swastika and nazi reference, this medium of film was too 'clean' and made it look like exactly what it was a modern contemporary film trying to be the 1940's rather than pulling it off so you are actually transported to that time. The whole thing was like making a rich fruit cake with all the finest ingredients but unfortunately forgetting to put the oven on !

A promising start but it soon decended to mediocre acting and a weak plot. A poor attempt at the genre.
