LOVEFiLM Review The Devil and Daniel Johnston

  • 4 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

Jeff Feuerzeig balances fandom with biographical rigour in this sensitive portrait of the deeply troubled musician.

Beautiful, inspirational and a great insight to a legendary man and mental illness. I would reccommend fans and non-fans to see this and would challenge anyone who isn't touched or moved by this film in anyway.

Heartbreaking, inspiring, terrifying, genius and broken man, immaculate documentary filming that puts you right in the man's head and life and makes you love him and his music even more than you may have already.

I personally think its cruel to make people like daniel johnston believe they have talent, if he was on the X factor or any of those appalling television programmes, the same people who think he's cool because of this film and his celebrity fans would be laughing at him. Its always terrible when someone doesnt realise they are the butt of a joke. File alongside G G Allin and Wild Man Fisher, tragic individuals who are profited from by others via the freakshow bandwagon. Also like Wild Man Fisher and GG Allin his songs are dreadful and he cant play the guitar very well, but apart from being awful in every conceivable way some people will like this film and some are condescending enough to call him a'Genius'

  • Amazing, Roller-coaster ride worth watching

I stumbled across this documentary the other night and was pleasantly surprised and couldnt stop watching. His music from a songwriters perspective has inspired many, Kurt Kobain was a fan. However, the struggle with his illness is a dominant feature throughout his life, yet it also colours many of his songs that must have touched the hearts of many and still does today.

To sum it up - ' Inspiring & Amazing! '

I'm sure this is is a great documentary and that this guy is a genius. But, really, are we all absolutely sure that he's not just just a slightly mentally ill guy who can't temper what he says? I got fed up with the monotonous, vocabulary-poor, whining about 15 minutes in. Call me an uncultured, shallow-minded, whinger myself, but I thihnk I could find this type of uncontrolled moan in any toddler with a guitar.

A competent documentary about a tiresome 'artist'. I would have output of the same intensity if my mum had nagged me that much.

    1 out of 5 ..
