Most helpful review The Devils

  • the Devil's is one one of the best British films

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I saw this film quite recently and was impressed by its style and content. The film has a wonderful use of speech and mannerism. It's visual style is also fantastic, in both costume and set design. The music too is in keeping with the dark intensity of the films subject and contents.

The film itself is based on two books which are themselves based on the conflict of religion, catholic and protestant in 17th century France.

The acting is archaic and yet modern.

The film is one of the best ever made in this country and stands up there with films such as lawrence of Arabia.

If you like Ken Russell then you would probably like it, but a poor film with a poor script. Artistic maybe but a horror film - no way!

I got this film sent a few days ago, and have watched it three times already! I'm just absolutely blown away by it. I don't ever remember a film affecting me so much, yes it's difficult to watch in places and disturbing too but this is offset by the sheer beauty of it. I've since ordered the book and also watched the documentary. Seriously this is a fascinating story and film and needs to be watched by everyone! Best film I've ever seen!

My husband normaly likes these kind of films, but he was vey disapointed with this one. He said it was nothing to do with Devils, but all about this one Priest. l

  • Horror meets art

A bizarre, in some ways horrific but incredibly stylish film. This is certainly the best movie by Ken Russell in my opinion. Derek Jarman designed the sets and they truly are works of art. The final scene could be a painting by Hieronymus Bosch. Not for the feint of heart but truly memorable. Oliver Reed alone is superb.

A theatrical masterpiece. Watching this timeless, architectural work of political insight in 2012 it is hard to know why the film caused such outrage in the 1970s. I guess it shows how far we have come that the film shocks now but probably only in the way intended by the Director. Now, we are not appalled by body parts or language or innuendo, rather we are shocked by hypocricy and the corruption of high office - common contemporary themes.
