WATCH IT OR MISS OUT

12 prisoners (hence the title) are recruited for a not much hope of coming back from this one mission in world war 2. Lee Marvin plays the tough military officer who gets to pick, train and then lead an all star cast into action. This is probably one of Marvins best ever performances. That's entertainment!
By a customer , 01 Mar 2013I'm old enough to have seen this in the cinema when it was first released and no question it really broke new ground. 'Inglorious Basterds' owes a lot to it so it's still influencing filmakers nearly 50 years on. It was never meant to be anything other than 'over the top' with its bunch of psychopathic 'heroes' played by some of the best actors around at the time plus great support from others such as Arthur Kennedy and Robert Ryan. The interaction between the characters works well and the humour varies between in your face and very subtle. It never descends into mawkish sentimentality which was/is a failing then and now of many US films. All these years later it's shown it deserves to be treated as a classic, can't say of it's genre, because it was the first of its kind.- Was this review helpful to you?

Like a long, drawn out Carry-On film

Seriously long and drawn out war-action film which, despite its star-studded cast, falls quite flat through most of it.
All the actors play themselves with probably the exception of John Cassavetes and even a young Donald Sutherland can’t save it.
The main problem is the pacing and that there’s not enough going on especially with 100 minutes build-up and training then the final third of the film the actual mission.
It also has a Carry-On feel to it mainly due to the ill-advised music and the bad attempts at humour which again don’t really work.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great, great movie
