    [Highly rated reviewer]

I am not one to leave film reviews, and honestly I guess a film has a lot to do with 'when' you see it as opposed to just the content of the film itself. So that can always be a factor in the subjectivity of a review....

All that aside I went to see this in London at a theater with my girlfriend, as we are both fans of Schnabel's work in 'Before Night Falls' and 'Basquiat'.

Having seen The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, nearly all the way through (we left about 10 minutes before it finished).

I may see worse than this one, but honestly we asked for out money back at the theater, which is something I have never done before in my life. I just felt this film was not in anyway an inspired, contrasting or justified in it's perspective as real life portrayal of a seemingly relentless situation.

But hey, at least it does make you feel something.

I already knew the story as it had been described at length in the newspapers. It is a deeply moving story. A man in his prime becoming trapped in his body, frustratingly unable to communicate, who overcomes his difficulties and finally dictates a book, letter by letter. It is a grown-up movie about regrets, love and compassion, that leaves you feeling sad, reflective and exhausted by the end. I don't think I could watch it again.

I loved this film fascinating and so moving, not at all depressing despite the theme. Isn't the human mind incredible!

  • The ultimate prison story - inspiring beyond words

    Do watch this!

This is a brilliant film that tells the story of what must be the ultimate horror, locked on syndrome.

I missed this in the cinema and must have ordered it out of curiosity. When this came weeks later, I thought, uh-oh, why did I order this!, I'll give it 10 mins.

It was not a miss step. I was gripped from the start and totally engrossed in Bauby's tragic story. The story is told from his perspective and tells how he fought to communicate and let people know he was still alive and that his brain and intellect were functioning inside his 'dead' body. The patient dedication and love of the people around him who helped him live with his condition is inspiring.

This is quite hard to watch but it is illuminating - an unexpected journey into a hard-to-imagine condition. Ups and downs, tragedy and comedy. Uplifting and depressing.

This is so profoundly sad, yet simultaneously inspirational. It's beautifully put together and awesome to eventually discover how it came into being.
