A critic's mistake..
By sorgos (22 reviews) from Fife , 27 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
I put this on expecting the full concert footage from the 1968 double header with Jefferson Airplane at the Roundhouse as featured in 'The Doors Are Open'. Instead I got an incredibly 80s Grace Slick, somebody who musically went from the sublime to the ridiculous, spouting anecdotes that if you're a Doors fan are pretty old news. So I turned it off. Decided to go back later and give it another chance after reading some reviews and yes, the concert is all there, including some footage from Europe too. So there's lots there that's not on 'The Doors Are Open' but a few bits and pieces that were new to me. The concert footage is excellent shot in grainy black and white. It makes a great companion piece to 'Live at the Hollywood Bowl'; more visceral and dirty. The sound is rawer and Manzarek's keyboard which can sound a bit weedy live, sounds great, distorted and powerful. And Jim's nice and mad and gets well sweaty. So I'm giving it 4 stars, would have been 5 if it hadn't been for Grace and her bowler hat...- Was this review helpful to you?
