"Went The Day Well" with good Germans ? A very good film.Recommended.
By roncoach (369 reviews) from suffolk , 19 Jan 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
A much maligned and under-rated film IMHO. I have seen critics reviews which revile Michael Caine as an inept and totally miscast lead-----I totally disagree, I think he is splendid, as is Donald Sutherland who plays a wonderful role).
A plot by the Germans to kidnap Churchill while he is on a private trip, without too much protection, to visit friends on the extreme east coast of England. An interesting original plotline based on the only good book ever written by Jack Higgins (IMHO:). Not too implausible as to be ridiculous, but interesting enough to make it an enthralling proposition. And that's how it turns out on the screen.
First of all, let's start to fight back against Caine's critics who say that he could not play a German colonel. Not only does he do so extremely well, but it also adds to his long list of top-notch performances. It is fair to say that, in his long career, he has played poor parts in poor films----but the majority have always been very good or excellent. This film falls into the latter category. He is a true 'great' of cinema.
The supporting cast is very good, especially Sutherland and Robert Duval. The locations are excellent. A good director directs well. Dialogue, editing and filming are all top of the range.
My only criticism is that the book could have been adapted a little better, but that is a minor point when looking at the pros and cons of this film.
It is a fine film which, if you missed first time round, is well worth seeing now. Indeed I have watched it several times and heartily recommend it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Germans try to Kidnap Winston Chruchill
By Flossiecom (6 reviews) from Norfolk , 07 Jul 2010Well this review is about the BLURAY version of the ' THE EAGLE HAS LANDED '.. The actors are all great in their character placement, Larry Hagman is a has been general that is hell bent of getting some action before he is retired. Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland and Robert Duvall are all great actors and this shows in this classic movie, to which their characters all shine in their roles..
Now down to the movie disc , it is a classic movie. The transfer to BluRay is great but you can see some degredation in some of the colours and some pixelation in some scenes, The audio is Stereo and has been cleaned up a lot.
The movie is about a elite set of German paratroopers who are tasked to kidnap Winston Churchill in East Anglia, United Kingdom from Hitlers 2nd in command (Himler). Needless to say it is well worth the watch, if not for the machine gun fights and explosion scenes.. The big question is do they succeed, well you will have to watch the movie to find out ;)- Was this review helpful to you?

Pictoral production
By Jeffa (226 reviews) from Southampton , 19 Apr 2010For 1976 this was a typical film of the time, bouncing on the heels of The Battle of Britain ITC had to bring out something to recapture the british spirit. Especially at the hieght of the miners strikes in England. The feature has been televised several times since then but becomes more popular with age. Thinking of stars like Larry JR Hagman, Donald Sutherland Jenny Agutter, Michael Caine and Robert Duval. In today's money it would have cost a small fortune to get all these stars in one room let alone in one film.
The story is centred around a plot to kidnap Churchill. It both carries some romanticism and some good filmography. The film has transfered very well to BR format and has upheld the quality of the 35mm film quality.
Good quality with a good background story worth a rental.- Was this review helpful to you?
