Sensitive and shocking

A film set around a smalltown literary festival in Ireland doesn't sound the most exciting of prospects but this brilliantly written and performed film examines the stresses and supernatural fears that arise through the grieving process. Ciaran Hinds is superb as the main protagonist and there is standout support from Aiden Quinn as an asshole american writer. Moving with genuine scares.- Was this review helpful to you?

(28)A Ghost Story with an Irish Heart
By DrScaredypants (1 review) , 24 Feb 2013If you are in the mood for a gentle - though at times unsettling - and satisfying ghost story set in a suitably dampish Irish landscape, with believable performances all round, and high production values then I would recommend this piece without reservation. The music, too, is fine, with melody haunting this piece as much as ... other things, and the piano refrains especially linger very nicely on the ear. If you're not wanting something like this, try something else instead: it's not Hallowe'en or The Evil Dead, so viewers expecting hardcore demons and their visceral, ill-tempered shenanigans will, naturally, be disappointed - hardly the cast and crew's fault, I would have thought, and the obvious effort that went into making this - I believe - fine piece of film-making surely deserves at the very least a mannerly and fair-minded appreciation of what it definitely offers rather than mean girning over its not sinking into mindless, gore-filled tosh. Unusual and thoughtful
By dorsetdoll (2 reviews) , 09 Feb 2013This was a beautifully made film...not what I was expecting. Well crafted cinematography, good acting and wonderful scenery. If you want an action packed blood fest, this is not your thing. If you enjoy a gentle romance, emotional storyline and a hint of the supernatural you might just enjoy this film. I'm Irish, so maybe I am biased but I loved this film and it will stay in my memory for a long time...- Was this review helpful to you?

Totally Pointless!

Drama or Horror
By juliab33 (1 review) , 28 Aug 2012This was an unusual film as far as ghost stories go. It was not what i expected from a good supernatural horror at all, but even so, it was still a good film. I would class it more as a thriller/drama rather then a horror. The story is more about the living then the dead, but when the dead did show, be it only briefly it did make me jump out of my seat. All in all, i did enjoy it, although i was a bit disappointed with the ending, but i will let you decide on that one as i dont want to give anything away.- Was this review helpful to you?

Nice to see dramas from this side of the pond.
Curl up and watch this, it's not taxing to watch.
If you've ever lost a loved one, then you'll empathise with the characters in this story.
Some may think it a bit slow at times, but not every movie needs to be fast paced.
