Good but gooey

As always the production team deliver something that is gorgeaus to look at cinematically but the film falls foul on being over schmaltzy hollywood style and so is no where near as good as Hero or Flying daggers

Dissapointing film

Disappointing film. I thought that this would be an historical action film starring Donnie Yen, what I got was a Kelly Chen vehicle (not a good thing unless your a fan of wooden acting, petchulance and lots of pouting). The problem with this film is that it does not know what it wants to be. It starts by setting the scene for historical intrigue with epic battle scenes but before any tension can build up it sidetracks into a saccharin love story set in what can only be describe as an Ewok village meets Waterworld (they even manage to ride a horse through the woods whilst staring into each other's eyes), then it remembers it was meant to be an action film and Donnie Yen is in it so they switch back to the action scenes, but by then any momentum has been lost. The action scenes are not the most original and one bears more than a passing ressemlance to part of The Warlords. At the end you find that you do not really care what happens to the characters.

Slow film but stunning imagery

I'll be perfectly honest here, whether a film is good or bad, provided it's a Chinese historical war or fantasy film I will watch it no matter what.

I'll start with the good news, I thought the Donnie Yen scenes were as spectacular as always. Very realistic, which is unusual for him, but at the same time he felt like one of the bosses in the Dynasty Warriors games, practically strong enough to take down entire regiments.

I think this movie was very slow and in some parts borderline boring, I found myself not really caring much about the progress of the Empress' love triangle and I was just waiting for the next Donnie Yen action sequence. I couldn't help feeling that there was no particular chemistry between any characters, romance or friendship. Some parts felt rushed also, I think an extra 30 minutes or so to delve deeper into the story and add one or two more fights and I would happily have rated this a 4 to 5 star.

Now I may be biased here expecting some sort of non-stop action rope-fest which is what China is brilliant at, I will admit, though slow paced this film is very vibrant and beautiful.

I think that many art-critics would rate this movie highly. But I yearned for just one or two more action sequences. That being said I still am glad I watched it, it is FAR from a bad movie.

It was my son who asked for this film and when it arrived I thought 'Oh no,subtitles and a marshal arts film' thankfully it did not live up to this expectation but was a good thoughtfully put together film. I ended up enjoying the film and was glad that I decided to watch it.

starts off ok but most of the film is taken up by the love story with sporadic action scenes at start and end of film

This could have been so much better..

The cinematography was fantastic. What let it down was the story and the over production. It so wanted to be like a hollywood blockbuster.

It's only saving grace was that it runs for just over 90 minutes, can you imagine if it had run for longer .....

If you like subtitled action films you'll like this. But with a week story line and as its not on for very long, there are better ones out there.
