Sarah Miles (Deborah Kerr)--the unhappy wife of a meek civil servant (Peter Cushing)--falls into a passionate love affair with American expatriate writer William Bendrix (Van Johnson) during the London Blitz. After an air raid interrupts one of their trysts, Sally inexplicably cuts the affair short, and Bendrix never quite gets over it. After the war, he hires a detective (John Mills) to find out what made her change her mind. The startling answer calls the very nature of love--and faith--into question. Director Edward Dmytryk manages to infuse this adaptation of the Graham Greene novel with plenty of spiritual and romantic yearning. Kerr conveys pages of emotion as Sarah, and Mills is a first-rate scene-stealer as the detective hired by Bendrix.

Outstanding
Refereshing to see a properf ilm with real film stars beautifully photographed and a well written plot. Both stars are believable although the film centres on a promise one of them make to God if the other is spared and though that sounds unlikely in this day and age, in 1956 when the film was made, audiences would have treated it with a grat deal less levity than they might now. Interesting also for the location shots of Little Venice fifty years ago when the old houses still remained.
I enjoyed this film. It's based on Graham Greene's novel and as you would expect it has religious themes. Kerr is great as Sarah Miles, wife of a civil servant who has an affair which writer William Bendrix which ends suddenly during a blitz bombing. This is the turning point of the story which sees Sarah assessing her past behaviour and the possibility for future redemption. The film is interesting from this point on because we see events and exchanges from Sarah's point of view but also from the perspective of Bendrix and her husband. It's a complex film which starts in the manner of Brief Encounter but quickly becomes darker and more serious. It would be worth a re-watch I think. And as ever, Kerr is excellent in portraying the emotional turmoil of her character.
