Good British HumourBy Gromit (44 reviews) from Canterbury , 05 Jul 2006
[Highly rated reviewer]This is one of those films that I really didn't want to like, but I ended up really enjoying. I'm not especially a fan of Hugh Grant, mainly because I find that he's constantly stereotyped as the bumbling English idiot...however in this film the bumbling English idiot thing just seems to work. Its a reasonably well written film that is apparently based on a true story. All of the characters are developed enough for you to care about them and the twee-ness of the whole thing is endearing enough for you to want to know how it ends. Granted its nothing special and certainly wouldn't win any awards, but its a 'nice' film and a great distraction if you want to chill on a saturday night or even a sunday afternoon. It reminds me very much of the old style Ealing comedies. I would say that if you like harmless British comedy drama and enjoyed films based around twee country villages such as 'Saving Grace' and 'Waking Ned', then you will enjoy this one too. 4/5 for being 'nice'.

Slow and boringBy a customer from Newcastle upon Tyne , 26 Mar 2011Not my cup of tea, a bit slow and boring, elements of an old black and white film, back in the 40 and 50s if you like that sort of thing.
There'll be a welcome...By Rumpole (22 reviews) from London , 14 Nov 2010Not the best vehicle for Hugh Grant. Light stuff and beautiful scenery and a quirky tale, demonstrating how the rural Welsh behaved under English 'colonial' rule via Ordnance Survey.
VERY GOOD !By joey135 (104 reviews) from Denbigh , 12 Mar 2010If you live in Wales or are Welsh, you will love this film ! You will see realism's in the character's !
Lighthearted funBy ClaireLangton (2 reviews) from Congleton , 24 Sep 2009Having read reviews of the film I really wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised. It's a very lighthearted film full of amusing moments. I especially enjoyed the anti-English/anti-Welsh humour. This film had me smiling from start to finish.
Not Quite As Stunning As A MountainBy Crookshanks (327 reviews) from Newport, Shropshire , 27 Apr 2009A delightful little film that has seemed to slip under the radar due to it's bigger brothers & sisters i.e Notting Hill, 4 Weddings etc. Hugh Grant plays the same kind of character, but put this to one side and enjoy the lovely little story about the Welsh community being annoyed that their 'mountain' has been declared a 'hill'! Although a little slow moving at times, it has its funny moments and the characterisations are just brilliantly written. Hasn't quite got the edge of other British comedies but it's a good film none-the-less.
