Based on a true story, the film describes the events leading up to the hero's decision not to return to the front line, after he was separated from his unit. The part played by Martin Sheen in his early days as an actor
He was not a coward, just a simple soul who would not or could not fire his rifle in action. This is a very watchable film which I found moving, Throughout there is a sense that no one really wanted him to be executed but his naivety and his stubborn decision to disobey orders left 'the Brass' with no alternative.
