The Exorcist is a tough act to follow, but director William Peter Blatty's official sequel to his original story, based on his book Legion, is more an intellectual suspense chiller drawn from the cerebral creaks and shadows of the mind. Lieutenant Kinderman (George C Scott replacing Lee J Cobb from the original terror classic) investigates a series of sacrilegious murders by the Gemini Killer, who may be a servant of the Devil. Relying heavily on static shots, elongated close-ups and academic dialogue (not tacky gore theatrics) to convey the real horror of life, sin and unbelief, Blatty's high-class Bible-bash is full of unexpected surprises, and there's one absolutely frightening moment of pure shock.
Fifteen years after the execution of the Gemini killer, Georgetown falls prey to grisly serial slayings bearing the... read more on Time Out
I love this film, something of an unsung classic. I cant recommend it highly enough. This was very original at the time and has heavily influenced such films a se7en and any other serial killer thrillers that have come after it. This is a Supernatural Serial killer/detective thriller and I think this has suffered from being associated with the original film in name, when in reality it is a completely different type of film and really only refers to characters from the Exorcist 1, there is no sign of Linda Blair or her mother, similar themes but a completely different story, This would have worked better as a stand alone film and not as part of the Exorcist franchise. It is based on the book Legion by William Peter Blatty and is also directed by him. If you have not seen this you really should.
What can you really say? Of course it was never gonna be as Inflammatory as the first devil bashing outing, but who'd of thought it would be this lame.
Okay, so thats a little unfair. This film was never meant to be a sequel to 'the Exorcist' and it never really wants to be, It must've been those hollywood b#stards that thought - hey, this film is written (and directed) by the same bloke (Bill Blatty) who did the Exorcist! lets just b#stardise his original idea and stick a bit of 'Tubular Bells' over it! Million dollar horror film!
I'd like to say that didn't work, but it kinda does! In a way. But not much. Still, you gotta love 'Brad Dourif'. His scenes are by far the best, infact, without him it'd be like watching the first film without 'Linda Blair'.
Put it this way, If you like, I dunno, Taggart, and that sort of thing then great. But if you like something like 'Saw', then i'm sure someone will wake you up once it's over.
There's great things to be found in this film (so i'm told), be my guest.
