Touted as “The Scariest Horror film ever”, the Exorcist is still head and shoulders above nearly all modern horror films.

A young girl develops an alternate destructive personality, and is slowly consumed by the new presence. With the finest doctors in America unable to cure her, her rich mother turns to the church for an Exorcism. This is a gripping story of a child at the mercy of a demon, with only a priest (and psychologist) who is losing his faith in God, as her only defence. Although some of the special effects may seem a little dated now, the overall story is still as frightening as ever.

  • Terrifying for its time but slow to get on with.

Wow, this movie is definaly scary and yet has a very slow start. Long story short, a young girl suddenly gets possessed by a evil demon that causes her to become a dangerous n terrifying person. It's up to two priests, one slowly dying and the other questioning his faith, to try and bring the girl back to her normal state. At first it starts slowly, building up until the real horrific stuff begins. Its not for the easily offended or deeply relieous as some of things and what the girl says isnt very nice at all. Clocking at over two hours, The Exorcist the verison you havent seen is frightening yet I wasn't as scared as I was with other such films as the Shining and Witchfinder General. Worth a rental but be warned, its also not for the faint of heart.

  • Shocking but not very interesting

Fans of 'movies' will not like the slow pace of the beginning of the film. But it is good at convincing an atheist that there could be something in the religious supernatural. The effects are unpleasant and it's too menacing to tip over into comedy. The characters aren't very sympathetic though, so you kind of struggle to care what happens. The devil is obsessed with sex which is strange when there are lots of other things to be evil about. Swearing and turning your head 360 degrees seem quite tame in the grand scheme. I'm glad I've seen such a famous film but I'm not sure I liked it much or found it interesting.

  • The Exorcist : reviewed by an atheist!!

Brilliant :superb direction, excellent dialogue and laced with some suitably dark humour.

A classic and still worth watching;it beats the more modern horror offerings and builds the suspense most enjoyably.

A couple of questions occurred however: why is one of the Catholic priests of Greek extraction-rather than Spanish or Italian say? (Most Greeks are Orthodox surely?)

Secondly, why would the Master of Lies/Satan/Evil One choose to wreak spiritual havoc by possessing one young girl and causing her to wallow in vomit/levitation/masturbatory fantasies and general mayhem?

Wouldn't it be more effective to take over a government/country/entire faith ?

Of course the story depends on the battle between the church of Rome and the demon and does not have a political message as such.

In contrast,Exorcist 2,The Heretic is dire, dull and diabolical-in the sense of being awful rather than evil;don't bother to watch this one: wooden script, ridiculous scenes and a frankly farcical 'mutual hypnosis' caper complete with equipment which resembles something from an early Blue Peter programme.

  • The seminal work of the genre (theatrical version better though).

This is supposedly the 'ultimate' version of 'The Exorcist'. Personally, I feel that the original theatrical version is actually better. It was interesting to see the additional footage, especially as Blatty was keen to have it seen, and that Friedkin eventually agreed with him.

This film remains the seminal work of this genre for me. I have been a fan of this film for many years and simply cannot understand why people find it funny. I can understand some people may not like it, but to think it's funny seems strange to me.

Some of the additional scenes seem a little gratuitous to me and so rather cheapen the film.

The original theatrical version would get 5 stars from me, in fact it would get 15 if they were available!
