A compelling treatise on identity and the correlation between physique and personality, this was Hiroshi Teshigahara's first feature since Woman of the Dunes, which was also adapted from a psychological novel by Kobo Abe. Shades of Franju's Eyes without a Face fall upon the action, as Tatsuya Nakadai dons a mask to disguise the hideous disfigurement incurred in an industrial accident. But, is it the mask that prompts him to discard his wife on a spurious charge of adultery, or the same desperate feelings of alienation that drive scarred Miki Irie to commit incest with her devoted brother? Disturbing, but absorbing.
Intriguing drama about a disfigured man given a second chance to experience a 'normal' life with a new face. Through an experimental medical technique, the man is given a mask with a new face; the face of another of the title. With his new face, the man is compelled to flirt with the darker side of existence, exploring his new found sense of anonymity. The results are both surprising and eventually tragic. Hiroshi Teshigahara lets the action develop in a meditative, slow-paced way, taking us through the development of the mask and its repercussions, exploring the ethical and metaphysical implications of the possibilities the identity change provides. This is also a film that examines the damaged psyche of a scarred nation emerging from war and trying to find a new place in the world. Very highly recommended, and little known, arthouse classic.
