Scream writer Kevin Williamson teams up with From Dusk till Dawn director Robert Rodriguez for this enjoyable reworking of alien invasion movies that's bolstered by Williamson's patented in-jokes and genre subversions. Considerably less subtle than the 1950s films that inspired it, this sci-fi horror thriller succeeds through assured performances from the teenage cast, zippy direction and the writer's refusal to take even the most tense moments seriously. Along the way, there's humorous homage paid to sci-fi related novels, TV and films. Despite a disappointing reliance on digital effects in the final third, this is classy extraterrestrial entertainment.

    Derivative but fun

The Faculty is an incredbily derivative film, lifting entires plots and scenes from the likes of Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers and The Thing, but despite all this the movie works well as an entertaining little horror flick. No classic, but slickl directed, and the usual bunch of overly photogenic American teenagers who populate this kind of movie are a little more interesting than the usual bucnh of slahser fodder. Fun disposable trash.

Sin City brings comic book to life

    • 03 Jun 2005

One of this year's most eagerly anticipated films comes to UK cinemas today, with the arrival of Sin City. The film is directed by Robert Rodriguez, the ambitious director behind other projects such as Four Rooms, From Dusk Till Dawn and The Faculty. The film-noir concept, based on the comic books of Frank Miller, is the first film to have been shot entirely on a digital backlot, with actors performing in front of a green screen, and the whole background being added post-production.
