    Excellent

I was impressed with this film when I saw it on television about 20 years ago and was just as impressed seeing it again on dvd. This is the story of a man facing the complexes of being brought up as a Hindu known as Ashouk as a small boy after his parents were massacred in India, then returning to England to become a soldier in his father's regiment who is then known as Ash. He returns to India and is torn between his old Hindu friends and the English community. A young princess is to be married to an elderly prince in another province and the pre wedding procession is magnificent, the costumes sumptuous and the journey exciting. Ash accompanies this extravaganza, falls in love with the princess's sister a half caste who he knew as a child and their moments together are very tender. When the old prince dies the scenes at the cremation are very tense and the scenery of the whole film is magnificent.

    Can you stick with it?

Comes in two discs over 6 hours long. It starts well but the starts to drag and never seems to amount to anything. The caravan journey to the wedding seems to go on forever and after a while you get bored, you can enjoy once a week but when transferred to whole discs becomes boring and a yawn. I never got to see the second disc as another 3 hours of the same was more than I could cope with.
