Ancient evil returns to destroy the galaxy in this ultra-hip, socially conscious and clever science-fiction action comedy from director Luc Besson. Laconic former government agent Bruce Willis is forced to save the universe when the secret key to stopping this happening literally falls into his cab in 23rd-century New York. A superb flight of imagination that soars into original terrain for an inventive roller-coaster ride, Besson's instant classic in the BLADE RUNNER tradition is a stunning achievement that delivers on all levels. The satire is slick, the visuals unusual and the thrills futuristic, and if the Big Apple special effects don't amaze, the camp trip to the resort planet of Fhloston Paradise certainly will. Gary Oldman's Zorg is haute-couture corruption personified.

Juvenile space hokum that derives from pulp writing of the 30s; its visual style and simple action narrative attracted a mass audience, presumably hungering for mindless entertainment, since that is what it successfully delivers.

    Sci fi Gold

Excellent film, immensely watchable, one of Bruce Willis' best performances (I know that's not saying that much) - very good performance from Gary Oldman (as usual) and excellent direction. Comic book-like storyline, I mean that in a good way, and superb direction, plus exquisite costumes from Gaultier. Totally recommended!

    Visually Stunning

Fifth Element is by no means a big name film. It will never be placed up there as one of the best in its genres, and if you ask your friends the majority of them will probably say that have not seen it. Well if they do, tell them to get it now. With its stunning visuals of a future New York City and strong performances, I would put this right up there as one of Bruce Willis' best films.

250 years into the future, Earth is under threat from evil, and only the fifth element is capable of stopping it and this in the form of a beautiful being by the name of Leelo. With the help of cabbie she must save the world from evil, which in turn is being assisted by Mr.Zorg who hopes to profit from the end of the world.

So, from listening to the plot of the film, it does not sound the strongest, and in all fairness, its not, and that is where this film lets down the audience slightly. But the vantage point that Sci-Fi films have is that they can get away with being unrealistic to the max, and Fifth Element is quite aware of that so runs with that idea. The visuals of New York in the future is just amazing, and would put it on the same level that I Am Legend created with the empty New York streets visuals. Bruce Willis is at his best with sarcasm, wit and attitude giving him a similar edge that he gave with the original Die Hard. The film will have you watching from start to finish without you ever becoming bored. It is fast paced, energetic and is always coming up with something new in every scene. Compare this with the comedy added in pieces throughout, and this film has everything. And to think that this film was brought out 10 years ago, I would say that it is better than most of the films brought out in recent times.

As previously said, the plot is where the film lets down. It’s a bit like a story line from a video game. In fact, the film does resemble the game Mass Effect in many ways, so if you’re a fan of the game, then go and get this film. The costumes are also a bit poor, with the aliens looking like actors in cheap costumes. However, these are minor specks on the radar of a great film. Its ram packed with action and will keep you interested right until the end. If you enjoyed Die Hard or Star Wars, then you will enjoy this film.
