Ancient evil returns to destroy the galaxy in this ultra-hip, socially conscious and clever science-fiction action comedy from director Luc Besson. Laconic former government agent Bruce Willis is forced to save the universe when the secret key to stopping this happening literally falls into his cab in 23rd-century New York. A superb flight of imagination that soars into original terrain for an inventive roller-coaster ride, Besson's instant classic in the BLADE RUNNER tradition is a stunning achievement that delivers on all levels. The satire is slick, the visuals unusual and the thrills futuristic, and if the Big Apple special effects don't amaze, the camp trip to the resort planet of Fhloston Paradise certainly will. Gary Oldman's Zorg is haute-couture corruption personified.
Juvenile space hokum that derives from pulp writing of the 30s; its visual style and simple action narrative attracted a mass audience, presumably hungering for mindless entertainment, since that is what it successfully delivers.
Excellent film, immensely watchable, one of Bruce Willis' best performances (I know that's not saying that much) - very good performance from Gary Oldman (as usual) and excellent direction. Comic book-like storyline, I mean that in a good way, and superb direction, plus exquisite costumes from Gaultier. Totally recommended!
Luc Besson is one of my favourite Directors - he always makes interesting movies. This one is no exception. Bruce Willis does a great job as the down on his luck 23rd century cabbie, and Milla Jovovich is excellent as Leeloo who has come to save the world. Gary Oldman is as always brilliant as the bad guy, giving a performance that is truly funny. The movie is an interesting mix of ancient myth and futuristic sci-fi. The action if fast paced and the special effects impressive, and the music cool.
Worth watching. Some great stuff to keep you happy for an hour or two on the Bonus Features too.

Sarandon, 63, will receive the lifetime achievement award at the event - with organisers celebrating the star for the "reflection, seduction and rebellion" she has portrayed on the big screen throughout her career. Her most famous roles include rebellious waitress Louise in 1991's Thelma and Louise and her Oscar-winning performance as... Read more
