Ancient evil returns to destroy the galaxy in this ultra-hip, socially conscious and clever science-fiction action comedy from director Luc Besson. Laconic former government agent Bruce Willis is forced to save the universe when the secret key to stopping this happening literally falls into his cab in 23rd-century New York. A superb flight of imagination that soars into original terrain for an inventive roller-coaster ride, Besson's instant classic in the BLADE RUNNER tradition is a stunning achievement that delivers on all levels. The satire is slick, the visuals unusual and the thrills futuristic, and if the Big Apple special effects don't amaze, the camp trip to the resort planet of Fhloston Paradise certainly will. Gary Oldman's Zorg is haute-couture corruption personified.

Juvenile space hokum that derives from pulp writing of the 30s; its visual style and simple action narrative attracted a mass audience, presumably hungering for mindless entertainment, since that is what it successfully delivers.

  • "...Mr. Besson directs with ceaseless flamboyance and with an obvious enthusiasm for his film's comic book conceits..."

    Sci fi Gold

Excellent film, immensely watchable, one of Bruce Willis' best performances (I know that's not saying that much) - very good performance from Gary Oldman (as usual) and excellent direction. Comic book-like storyline, I mean that in a good way, and superb direction, plus exquisite costumes from Gaultier. Totally recommended!

    The fifth element

This is a great film with a very strong story. Bruce Willis is amazing as the hero, while Gary Oldman is again super as the over the top bad guy. Leeloo, played by Milla Jovovich is absolutley super and incredibly sexy throughout, but yet she is always underrated. She did an amazing job and rounds the film off nicely!

    Brilliant

If your a fan of films of Luc Besson films such as Taxi you'll realise how stylised his film are and this is no exception, in fact, the Fifth Element takes the style to the next level. Stunning visuals, amazing costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier and a fantastic soundtrack make the base for a great fun, action fact adventure.

I thoroughly recommend this film (if only for the beautiful Milla Jovovich ;o)

    Fantastic fun

What a delightful film! Star performances from everyone here, from Willis (usual tough guy attitude buit with a little comic twist), and Jovovich (whose acting, whatever anyone says, surpasses her reputation), and Holm is excellent as the priest with a burden.

Almost like a comic strip translated into film form, Oldman's character truly emphasising this with style, this film merges the boundary between the two with perfection, resulting in a thoroughly enjoyable film all round.

    9/10. Fantastic.

    Sci-Fi entertainment

Luc Besson is one of my favourite Directors - he always makes interesting movies. This one is no exception. Bruce Willis does a great job as the down on his luck 23rd century cabbie, and Milla Jovovich is excellent as Leeloo who has come to save the world. Gary Oldman is as always brilliant as the bad guy, giving a performance that is truly funny. The movie is an interesting mix of ancient myth and futuristic sci-fi. The action if fast paced and the special effects impressive, and the music cool.

Worth watching. Some great stuff to keep you happy for an hour or two on the Bonus Features too.

Great Film - Pity about the DVD

Set three hundred years in the future with the Earth the centre of a Federation, Bruce Willis is your typical taxi driver in downtown New York. Meantime in Outer Space a strange object has just wiped out a Federation starship on its way to Earth to draw down the Eternal Dark. An obscure priest tells the President what needs doing but when the starship carrying the mystical Fifth Element is destroyed it looked like all was up. Fortunately the aliens had a backup plan and the Perfect Being was recreated in Earth's labs only to escape and end up in Bruce's cab.

After the car chase to end car chases, in three dimensions, Bruce and his inadvertant passenger make it back home. During the chase Bruce had been introduced to the priest (Ian Holme).

Being ex military and out of a job, Bruce found the general's request he go and recover the controlling stones for the Ultimate Weapon unavoidable. With three other parties pretending to be Bruce at the check out, there was some fun and games including the now traditional violence from Bruce and his enemies.

After a seriously inspired performance from the Diva more violence breaks out endangering the Perfect Being and killing the Diva, Bruce, the Perfect Being and the priest end up in the Egyptian desert in an attempt to defeat the Ultimate Evil. But the Perfect Being had learnt about war but not love and was uncomfortable with her role.

Along with the trademark violence, there is a large degree of slapstick humour from both Bruce Willis and Ian Holme recalling Bruce Willis's role in Moonlighting.

The only negative comment I have against this DVD is the design of the user menu right at the start - there is no easy method of making selections.
