Top Film
By NJ81 (6 reviews) from Bristol , 28 Jan 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
I watched this last night at a preview screening, I'd heard some of the Oscar buzz beforehand but wasn't exactly sure what to expect. Not long into the film and I was hooked. The film has a great mix of comedy & drama, the brother's family in particular provide some good laughs.
Great story and stand out performances by Bale, Walhberg & Amy Adams, the film flew by! It's also minus the cheese that the Rocky films have plenty of which is a good thing. It would be a shame if this doesn't get a few Oscars.
I urge you to go and watch/rent this film when you can!!- Was this review helpful to you?

(411)More than just boxing
By Routemaster (87 reviews) from Cambridge , 24 Apr 2013Based on a true story of Micky Ward's (Wahlberg) bid for the world light welterweight title. Aided or hindered by his trainer and half brother Dicky (Bale); who himself had been a professional with his only claim to fame of fighting, knocking down but losing against Sugar Ray Leonard. Washed up Dicky and their mother Alice (Leo) control all of Ward's fights until he comes to the realisation they are only in it for themselves and goes it alone. Great movie with family relationships at the heart of the plot - don't rent this one if youare expecting a 'Rocky' type movie.- Was this review helpful to you?

Tough Strings
By Fr4nch3sk4 (22 reviews) from Derby , 14 Feb 2013Was a little torn towards the end as to who's side I was on. Not a fan of boxing, enjoyed the background story to the boxing.- Was this review helpful to you?

Boxing Clever
By a customer , 28 Jan 2013Superb film that happens to be around the theme of boxing but is more about the relationships within a family. Sure, I found myself being pulled into the 'I hope that he wins against the odds' but felt that my interest was focused more on the dynamics between the protagonist's errant brother and the relationship with his doting mother. Mark Wahlberg does a great job of allowing this to happen, letting Christian Bale's and Melissa Leo's performances to take centre stage. Don't watch this if you're looking for a Rocky style film about boxing - it is so much more than this and you will be disappointed.- Was this review helpful to you?
