Jack London's short story The Mexican is turned into a nothing B-movie. Richard Conte becomes a prizefighter to raise money for the revolution against a local bigwig who is responsible for the slaughter of his village, including his sweetheart. He decides to take on a big name fighter. Conte is not leading man material, Vanessa Brown is the vague love interest and Lee J Cobb is found busking between better assignments like On the Waterfront. Only James Wong Howe's camerawork has any class.

The Fighter is a knock out

This is the type of movie we used to appreciate in the middle of the 20th Century. An understandable story about politics with passion laced with some good boxing scenes.

Lee J Cobb and others provide some splendid acting and it is a revolutionary story to warm the soul reminiscent of the sort of dedication that saw people go off to fight for a cause in a distant land such as in those who saw service elsewhere such as in the Spanish Civil War.

This stirring stuff concerns Mexico and Richard Conte is excellent and the mood of the film is extremely South American.
