  • Powerful film but not for the faint-hearted

Beautifully acted and filmed epic set during the infamous Rape of Nanjing. I'd like to warn viewers beforehand that this is one of the most brutally violent films i've ever seen'. Having said that, the film brings the sufferings of innocent Chinese children and women under the yoke of a merciless and barbaric Japanese regime to vivid and poignant life.

I already had some understanding of what went on during the Rape of Nanjing before i saw the film and i wonder if the heart-stoppingly graphic violence was entirely necessary. Having said this, I'm glad i saw this film ... but would definitely not want to see it again.

  • Savagery of War and touching humanity withal

This is a very touching story based on real historical events. At times it veers into the realms of the incredible but then returns to credible representation of how things might have been in war ravaged Nanking. The young actresses playing the students and the prostitutes were often brilliant in their acting. A hugely enjoyable film.

  • You need to see this movie.

This is by far one of the most intense movies I've seen. It depicts a tale that many have heard of in passing, but that many do not know the full details of. It's horrifying, sickening and beautiful. Bale is magnificent and the story itself moving; more than once a tear or two rolled down my cheek. Watch it!

  • Good film about hope in war

A really good film based on a book. The scene is Nanking during the 1937 Japanese attack. The film shows Japanese brutality and how grim war is. With this background the story is about the escape of some catholic (virginal) novice girls from a church. The fake priest is in fact an mortician. Local Chinese prostitutes play a key part. Very well filmed and acted, a good story. The first chinese produced film I have seen. Excellent.

Really, really beautiful film, and very emotional. Excellent acting by Christian Bale. Sad to think it was inspired by real events. Would have loved a fairytale ending but sadly real life isn't quite so scripted. Reminds me of Memoirs of a Geisha...really beautiful.
